PLANT AS MENTOR: REBEL BOTANY

“I’m very good with plants. When my friends are away,
they let me keep the soil moist.”—Fever Ray

The second session, PLANT AS MENTOR, comes to you courtesy of French rebel botanists who’ve taken to the streets labelling plant species that grow between the cracks. The citizen-scientist project “Sauvages du ma rue” encourages urban dwellers to explore their cities attuning to wild plants that have taken root in built environments. These plants are referred to as ruderal species, a category of life able to colonise areas disturbed by human activity.

As you’ll see in the photo, I took a walk in Reykjavík and used Icelandic and English to name the edible Taraxacum officinale.
