Publishing is one of the most gratifying moments in a writing career. Once your work is finished and polished, there comes a moment when you release it to the world: you let it leave the privacy of your creative space and enter the world of readers. This transformative process of making a work available to the public is what we call publishing.
⚙️ Publishing Format
There are multiple publishing formats you can consider:
- traditional book publishing
- independent and small-press publishing
- self-publishing
- zines and chapbooks
- literary magazines and journals
- anthologies and collections
- exhibitions, art projects, performances
- sound projects and audiobooks
- online publishing and digital platforms
⚙️ Finalising Your Work
The publishing process will vary considerably depending on the format, but in this section we will discuss some key steps to consider:
- Consider working with a professional editor or a fellow writer with editing experience. The support can range from coaching or guiding you through the writing process, offering feedback and suggestions on plot, characters, structure, or narrative flow; editing your work sentence by sentence to improve readability; copyediting to improve grammar, syntax, and spelling; or proofreading to catch typos and refine wording.
- Consider sharing your work with a few trusted readers who can offer feedback. This can help you identify plot holes, improve pacing, and ensure your story has a strong impact on the reader.
- Especially if you plan to print your work, consider working with a proofreader who can help ensure your final printed version is free of typos.
⚙️ Submitting Your Work
Finding a publisher or publishing opportunity can take time and effort. When considering where and how to submit your work, keep the following in mind:
- What publishing format are you aiming for?
- Which publisher or opportunity best fits your work, audience, and format?
- Are there any official submission requirements or guidelines?
- What costs or fees should you be prepared for?
- What contract terms are involved (e.g. rights, royalties, exclusivity)?
- What is the publisher’s reach, and how widely will your work be distributed?
- How will your work be promoted after publication?
When submitting your manuscript, it may be helpful to include a cover letter and any additional materials that could strengthen your application.
If you are working in a non-dominant language, it may also be useful to attach a translation sample.
⚙️ Production and Publication
Depending on the format and context in which you are publishing, the production process can vary significantly. The most important is to clearly understand the roles, tasks, and responsibilities involved, including what you are expected to do and what will be handled by others.
Below are key production steps depending on the format:
- Publishing on paper (books, zines, printed materials): Translating (if needed), editing, proofreading, graphic design, layout, choosing paper type, format and size, deciding print run (number of copies), printing, shipping, and distribution.
- Exhibitions, art projects, performances: Selecting and preparing a venue, rehearsals, coordination of artistic and technical teams, materials and equipment, installation and spatial design, graphic design and visual identity, scheduling (duration and programme), documentation, and ticketing or audience management.
- Sound projects and audiobooks: Recording space and equipment, technical support, script preparation (if applicable), recording sessions, sound editing and mastering, proofreading or editing of scripts/texts, graphic design for covers or promotional material, and selecting distribution platforms.
- Online publishing and digital platforms: Translating (if needed), editing, proofreading, content formatting, graphic design and visual presentation, platform selection (website, social media, digital publisher), uploading, digital distribution strategy.
⚙️ Promotion and Distribution
Publication does not end with a finished product. Once your work is ready to meet the public, there are still important steps to consider:
- Promotion through media, social media, and your own community
- Sharing information with literary institutions, cultural organisations, and educational institutions
- Sending your work to literary critics, reviewers, and relevant press
- Organising a launch event (such as a book launch, premiere, or opening) to present and celebrate your publication
- Distribution through established booksellers, distributors, and relevant platforms
- Direct sales by the author (online, at events, readings, or meetings)
